BLOGATHON: My Movie Confessions

Nostra has started another great blogathon (you're probably familiar with his Actors/Actresses relays) where participants list their movies confessions in response to a series of questions. Without further ado, here are my secrets:

Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?
2001: A Space Odyssey. I was thrilled by the beginning of the film, but as it went on I got tired of those long scenes of nothing but spacecraft in space.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?
I could list way more than ten, as it has only been since last year that I really sought out older films. My "Oldie Goldies" feature on the site is a result of a conscious effort to watch pre-1960 films. Here's a sample of what I've missed:

1. North by Northwest
2. Citizen Kane
3. Seven Samurai
4. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
5. The Third Man
6. The Night of the Hunter
7. The 400 Blows
8. The Bicycle Thief
9. The Maltese Falcon
10. The Philadelphia Story

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?
I haven't. The guilt would be too much for my conscience to take.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?
This is a good question, as I was thinking about a similar question recently. I realized that there aren't many actors/actresses that I actively dislike. I feel like even bad actors can do well with a role that is suited to them. If I had to choose one actress, I would have to say Emma Thompson. I think she's a good actress, but I haven't been blown away by anything she's done. For the men, I would say Nick Nolte. I'm not very impressed with his acting style, maybe it's just his voice that I can't stand.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?
Ingmar Bergman. I know, I know. I'll get around to it. I am interested in watching his films, so it's only a matter of time.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?
White Chicks. This is a real guilty pleasure for me. I know it's a bad film, but I find it hilarious.

Have you ever been "one of those annoying people" at the cinema?
Not really, I am usually very courteous in the cinema. However, I am prone to let out a huge laugh when there is a witty movie reference or some other cultural reference. Often, I'm the only one laughing.
There was also the one time when I watched Twilight: Eclipse (there was nothing else to watch) with my best friend and we kept laughing at some of the melodramatic parts. All the other people in the audience were Twihards. I'm telling you, if looks could kill...damn.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?
I knew Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would be pretty bad, but I watched it on opening weekend just for Johnny Depp. I love Jack Sparrow.

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles?
Sometimes, but only if it's really long and I'm not that interested in the story to begin with. When I was younger though, I definitely would have avoided movies with subtitles.

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?
No. I usually only buy movies that I am dying to see.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?
I own Pearl Harbor, a movie I only vaguely remember. I can't be bothered to get rid of it, so it's just sitting there on my shelf.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?
I stream a lot through Netflix, so I have my laptop hooked up to my tv. My dad recently bought a 3D TV, but I haven't been able to use the 3D capabilities much.

Any other confessions you want to make?
I've cried in quite a few films. Titanic, The Color Purple(I was a big sloppy mess at the end of that movie), The Kite Runner, The Bucket List. I'm sure there are others, I just can't think of them right now. In case you were wondering, yes I am a straight male.

  1. North by Northwest is one of my favorite movies. It's one of Hitchcock's best and just wonderfully entertaining. I'd suggest starting there from your 10 films and following that up with The Third Man and The Seven Samurai. You can't really go wrong with any of those picks. I looked at your full List of Shame, and there are tons of great ones in there.

  2. Haha, more people came out with their 2001: A Space Odyssey confession than I expected. I definitely see the similarities that you were talking about. And lol, both of us are not that scared of Twilight fans. I love Jack Sparrow, too!

  3. I have never liked Nick Nolte either -- I don't really know why. And I like Captain Jack Sparrow too. :)

  4. Good lord, Pearl Harbour is awful. I have no idea why I continued to watch it.

Ah White Chicks - it isn't as bad as people make it out to be, for sure!

You'd really like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly btw, check it out when you can!

  5. Thanks a lot for joining and sorry to visit so late, but going through each and every entry is taking a lot of time :)

I don't like 2001 either, it just bored me!

Out of the 10 movies you mention I only have not seen number 10 and saw The 400 Blows and The Bicycle Thief only a couple of weeks ago. Both worth checking out.

Emma Thompson is a unique choice, have not read other choosing her, same for Nick Nolte :) Didn't you like his performance in Warrior?

Bergman was one of the most named directors. I only checked out his work fairly recently.

White Chicks is a very funny movie, so can't be mad at you for loving it!

I gave up on the PotC movies after the second one and don't have the feeling I'm missing out on anything.

Pearl Harbor is a pretty bad movie...I might have fast forwarded through it if I remember correctly.
