OSCAR WATCH: The Documentary Features

A busy day of awards news continues with the Academy's announcement of the Documentary Feature shortlist. From what I've heard, the field was exceptionally strong this year. As a result, there was bound to be some snubs. I'm personally pleased to see "The Imposter" make the cut(it's the only one I've seen and I quite enjoyed it). Here are the 15 eligible films hoping to make the final cut of 5 nominees:

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Bully
Chasing Ice
Detropia
Ethel
5 Broken Cameras
The Gatekeepers
The House I Live In
How to Survive a Plague
The Imposter
The Invisible War
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God
Searching for Sugar Man
This Is Not a Film
The Waiting Room

  1. No Marley. That's a shame. I thought it was excellent. I expect The Imposter will triumph. The Oscars have a bad reputation when it comes to Documentaries though. Senna never even made the long list!

    1. Yeh, the documentary list always has some glaring omissions. I think The Imposter should get nominated, but my gut tells me they will go for something more "important" for the win. Your guess is as good as mine though. All we can do now is wait.

  2. Its amazing for me that normally don't watch many docs to actually having seen two of these in the cinema.

Searching for Sugarman and The Imposter. I think both are good but I didn't go all the way for similar reasons. Sugarman felt a little staged in its narrative and The Imposter was leaning to much on the perpetrator to become a convincing film. Of those two I'd choose Sugarman for its Swedish ties but its no Hoop Dreams or Thin Blue Line.

    1. I liked The Imposter a lot, but you have valid concerns about it.
