Best of 2012

I've been very vocal lately in defense of 2012 as a high quality year for film. However, my Best of 2012 list seems to fall in line with other bloggers who say that there was a lot to like, but not necessarily to love. Especially considering the large number of films I watched this year, I'm really surprised that I didn't match the 30-film lineup of 2011. For 2012, I found 24 films that I really loved (4.5 to 5 stars). Here they are, starting with my #1 - "Arbitrage".

Arbitrage
The Perks of Being A Wallflower
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
The Dark Knight Rises
Prometheus
Lincoln
A Royal Affair
Argo
End of Watch

Paranorman
Searching for Sugar Man
The Amazing Spider-man
21 Jump Street
The Grey
Ruby Sparks
Flight
Silver Linings Playbook
Amour
How To Survive A Plague
Caesar Must Die
The Imposter
The Invisible War
Rise of the Guardians

  1. Great to see A Royal Affair love, that film was great. I think we have relatively similar taste overall too! Arbitrage is definitely a unique #1 pick, I quite enjoyed it myself, Gere was fantastic.

Didn't realise you enjoyed Lincoln that much!

    1. Haha, I know my tweets made it seem like I wasn't a Lincoln fan, but I'm pretty good at removing my personal feelings when I'm predicting Oscars.

I'm glad you enjoyed Arbitrage, I suspect there are many people who will be quite puzzled with that choice as #1.

  2. I think last year was a pretty good year overall. I'd give seven of those above films very high marks but haven't seen eight of them. I think there are a couple of films which will be remembered for decades and several which will be fondly remembered in years to come.

  3. Wow, Artbitrage, one of the first movies of late 2012 I saw. I loved it too. Generally, it's great list. However expected the inclusion of Les Mis in your list :)

    1. Thanks, I'm glad you loved Arbitrage too. Great thriller. I only gave Les Miz 4 stars, so it missed out on this list.

  4. Ahh, I am so pleased to see Flight here. Me and you, man. I think we're the only bloggers in our circle who dug that one so much.

Love that Arbitrage is your number one. I had no idea you liked that movie so much. Gere was a beast there.

  5. For me, Arbitrage accomplished everything it set out to do. It had me riveted from start to finish. It was everything I wanted from this kind of thriller. Gere was a beast indeed and I also enjoyed Sarandon, Parker and Marling a lot.
