This unusual awards season continues tomorrow with the Screen Actors Guild awards, where the "frontrunners" in the various acting categories will hope to seal their Oscar fate. Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway seem like the only locks at this point, so a win here will be a good boost for the contenders in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. I think "Silver Linings Playbook" will do pretty well here, but who knows. Here are my predictions:
Best Ensemble (equivalent to the Best Picture Award)

Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook

I really hope Silver Linings Playbook doesn't win. It's massively overrated in my opinion. I'd give the Ensemble award to Lincoln or maybe Les Miserables.
ReplyDeleteI think Lincoln is a better film, but I wouldn't mind Silver Linings Playbook winning. I think the 4 Oscar nominations for acting are a good sign for a SAG triumph.
DeleteAll 5 nominees have excellent ensemble casts(although I would prefer Best Exotic not to win), so it wouldn't bother me either way.
I think Silver Linings is underrated, so agree to disagree. :)
I honestly don't see the appeal with that film. I see it as a decent rom com and nothing more. I'm really shocked by its award recognition.
DeleteYou're probably right about the Oscar nominations being a good indication but I think that Bradley Cooper's and especially Jacki Weaver's nominations are unjustified. I like Weaver a lot but she wasn't brilliant in that film.
You're not alone in your opinion. The 3 main awards bloggers I follow all have issues with Silver Linings too.

I think it was his best performance to date but I don't think it was Oscar nomination worthy. I was wondering how it was received here in the UK and just checked our biggest paper's reviews. None of them gave it more than 3/5. Maybe it's just a film that plays better on the other side of the Atlantic. I don't think it's a bad film but I'm perplexed by how well it is being perceived.

DeleteI don't think Silver Linings Playbook is a rom-com per say, I'm not a fan of rom-com's but SLP is one of my favorites! So as I understand that people have different opinions, I want to ask not to call SLP a rom com because compared to the rom coms out there, it certainly deals with much more than the hollow and shallow issues the actual romantic comedies tend to posses.
